11 Industrial Corridors to be developed as part of National Industrial Corridor Programme (NICP)
- The government has approved the development of 11 Industrial Corridors with 32 Projects to be developed in four phases up to 2024-25 in the country as part of the National Industrial Corridor Programme (NICP) which are under various stages of development.
- Industrial corridors are conceived to foster global manufacturing, investment destination hubs, and smart cities with the best-in-class infrastructure.
National Industrial Corridor Programme (NICP):
- National Industrial Corridor Development Programme is India’s most ambitious infrastructure programme aiming to develop new industrial cities as “Smart Cities” and converging next-generation technologies across infrastructure sectors.
- The Objective of the development of industrial corridors is to expand the industrial output, increasing employment opportunities, provide better living and social facilities for the new and growing workforce by way of providing plug n play infrastructure at the plot level for industries. .
- Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) project, first industrial corridor, was approved by the Union Cabinet of India in 2007.
Implementing Agency:
- National Industrial Corridor Development Corporation Limited (NICDC) [erstwhile Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor Development Corporation Limited (DMICDC)] is the implementing agency that an acts as a knowledge partner to NICDIT in respect of all the Industrial Corridor projects for undertaking various project development activities.
Phases of development:
- Phase 1: Projects approved
- Phase 2: Projects in advance stage of planning and implementation to be initiated by 2021
- Phase 3: Projects under development and implementation likely to be initiated by 2023
- Phase 4: Projects under conceptualization and implementation likely to be initiated by 2024

- Chennai Bengaluru Industrial Corridor (CBIC)
- Amritsar Kolkata Industrial Corridor (AKIC)
- East Coast Industrial Corridor (ECIC) with Vizag Chennai Industrial Corridor (VCIC) as Phase 1
- Bengaluru Mumbai Industrial Corridor (BMIC)
- Extension of CBIC to Kochi via Coimbatore
- Hyderabad Nagpur Industrial Corridor (HNIC)
- Hyderabad Warangal Industrial Corridor (HWIC)
- Hyderabad Bengaluru Industrial Corridor (HBIC)
- Odisha Economic Corridor (OEC)
- Delhi Nagpur Industrial Corridor (DNIC)
Significance of industrial corridors:
- Industrial Corridors project of India is likely to lower the cost of logistics, hence increasing the efficiency of industrial production structure.
- It will attract investments for the development of Industries, which is likely to create more jobs in the market.
- It will be setting up an industrial township, educational institution, hospital. Projects will further raise the standards of human development.
- It will prevent the concentration of industries in one particular location, which exploited the environment beyond its carrying capacity and caused environmental degradation.
- The industrial corridor project will also increase social integration in the country.
