ARCI signs know-how transfer Agreement with Allox Minerals

  • International Advanced Research Centre for Powder Metallurgy and New Materials (ARCI), has developed indigenous technology for the production of Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) cathode material for Li-ion Batteries (LiBs) at its Centre for Nanomaterials.
  • ARCI emphasized the importance of having a synergy among various organizations having complementary capabilities.
  • ARCI and Allox Minerals, a Hyderabad-based company, signed an Agreement for Know-How Transfer on August 12, 2021.

Lithium Iron phosphate LiFePO4 (LFP):

  • It is extensively used in the Lithium-ion battery field as cathode material.

key advantages of LFP:

  • high current rating
  • long cycle life
  • superior thermal stability
  • delivers a lower nominal voltage, which results in lower specific energy when compared to other cathode materials on the market.
  • higher self-discharge than other Li-ion battery types.

Li-ion Batteries:

  • A lithium-ion battery or Li-ion battery is a type of rechargeable battery.
  • Lithium-ion batteries are commonly used for portable electronics and electric vehicles and are growing in popularity for military and aerospace applications.
  • In the batteries, lithium ions move from the negative electrode through an electrolyte to the positive electrode during discharge, and back when charging.
  • Lithium-ion batteries use an intercalated lithium compound as the material at the positive electrode and typically graphite at the negative electrode.

Advantages of Li-ion Batteries:

  • High energy density
  • Rate of self-discharge is much lower than that of other rechargeable cells
  • Low maintenance required
  • The voltage of each lithium-ion cell is higher, requiring fewer cells in many battery applications.
  • No requirement for priming

Disadvantages of Li-ion Batteries:

  • Contain flammable electrolytes, and if damaged or incorrectly charged can lead to explosions and fires.
  • Suffer from ageing, able to withstand 500 - 1000 charge discharge cycles before their capacity falls.
  • Many airlines limit the number of lithium-ion batteries they take,
  • Expensive to manufacture – about 40 per cent higher in cost than nickel-cadmium.
  • Requires protection circuit to maintain voltage and current within safe limits.

Applications of Li-ion Batteries:

  • Electronic gadgets, Tele-communication, Aerospace, Industrial applications.
  • Lithium-ion battery technology has made it the favourite power source for electric and hybrid electric vehicles.

International Advanced Research Centre for Powder Metallurgy and New Materials (ARCI):

  • It was established in the year 1997, is an Autonomous Research and Development Centre of Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India with the main campus at Hyderabad
  • Objectives:
  • Development of High Performance Materials and Processes for Niche Markets
  • Demonstration of Technologies at Prototype / pilot scale
  • Transfer of Technology to Indian Industry
