Army to commemorate 62 years of the Battle of Walong with China

To mark the 62nd anniversary of the iconic battle of Walong during 1962 war with China, the Army is planning a month-long series of commemorative events beginning Thursday till November 14.

To mark the 62nd anniversary of the Battle of Walong during the 1962 India-China war, the Indian Army is organizing a month-long series of commemorative events. These events will take place from October 17 to November 14, 2024, and will feature a blend of military and community activities aimed at honoring the bravery of the soldiers who defended India's borders.

In 1962, the Indian Army faced an aggressive advance by the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) of China. The Walong sector saw fierce battles as Indian troops held back the advancing Chinese forces for 27 days. Despite being vastly outnumbered, Indian soldiers, including regiments from Kumaon, Sikh, Gorkha, and Dogra, displayed remarkable bravery, forcing the Chinese Army to deploy additional divisions.

The battles were fought in harsh terrain, ranging from 3,000 to 14,000 feet in elevation. With no road access and dependent entirely on air support, Indian soldiers faced logistical challenges but fought until the last man and last round. The sheer courage displayed by these troops was highlighted by Time magazine in 1963: “At Walong, Indian troops lacked everything. The only thing they did not lack was guts.”

The current situation in the Walong sector is vastly different from that of 1962. There has been significant improvement in infrastructure and force deployment by the Indian Army. Modern advancements in roads, firepower, and manpower ensure better defense capabilities.

As part of the commemoration, the Walong War Memorial, known as Shaurya Sthal at Lama Spur, will be inaugurated along with key infrastructure projects aimed at strengthening the region's defense preparedness.

The anniversary events are designed to engage both military personnel and local communities in Arunachal Pradesh. These activities will highlight the adventurous spirit of the Indian Army and include:
- White-water rafting
- Motorcycle and bicycle rallies
- Battlefield and adventure treks
- A half marathon
In addition, medical and veterinary camps will be organized to support the local population, reflecting the Army’s commitment to community welfare.

The commemorative events will culminate on Walong Day, November 14, with a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the renovated war memorial. The event will feature an evocative battle narration that recounts the bravery of the Indian soldiers. The day will also be marked by cultural performances from Mishmi and Meyor dancers, showcasing the unique traditions of the region.

The 62nd anniversary of the Battle of Walong is not just a remembrance of a historical conflict, but a tribute to the unwavering courage of the Indian soldiers who laid down their lives. The month-long celebration honors their sacrifice and serves as a reminder of the enduring spirit of the Indian Army.
