Bank Sakhis
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Prayagraj to participate in a programme that was organised to empower women, especially at the grassroots level.
- During this visit, the Prime Minister interacted with Bank Sakhis (Bank correspondents) and encouraged them by transferring Rs. 4,000 as the first month's stipend in the account of 20,000 B.C.-Sakhis.
About Bank Sakhis
- To help with financial inclusivity and aid of communities in rural areas, the government initiated the “One Gram Panchayat (GP) one Business Correspondents (BC) Sakhi” mission.
- Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM) under the Ministry of Rural Development, started a process of engagement of women Self Help Group (SHG) members as Business Correspondents (BC) for providing basic banking services in every Gram Panchayat (GP) in the rural areas of India.
- The women SHG members are provided one week's residential training at Rural Self Employment Training Institutes established by the Lead bank of the district wherein they have to pass an online examination.
Responsibilities of a Bank Sakhi
- The key responsibilities of Bank Sakhi are as follows:
- Whenever leaders of SHGs/ members of SHG visit the bank to deposit/ withdraw money, the bank Sakhi should help the SHGs in:
- Filling transaction slips/ bank challans
- In accounting of cash – segregation by denomination
- Whenever leaders of SHGs/ members of SHG visit the bank for linkage, the Bank Sakhi should help the SHGs in:
- Completing documentation formalities for account opening and filling in loan application;
- Opening of individual accounts of the members in the bank
- Assisting SHGs in seeking other financial services from the bank.

Digipay Sakhi Scheme
- In an effort to promote door-to-door digital banking and financial services, DAY–NRLM signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with CSC e-Governance India Ltd (an associate of Ministry of Information and Technology, Govt of India) to engage women SHG members as 'DigiPay Sakhi'.
- Under the MoU, CSC e-Governance India Ltd provides one Finger Print Device to SHGs members to start basic banking service through DigiPay Application on their mobile handset.
- The DigiPay Sakhis also provide payment facilities for MGNREGA and other subsidies under Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) to the rural community at doorsteps.
