Dairy Sahakar scheme

  • Shri Amit Shah launched the ""Dairy Sahakar"" scheme at Anand, Gujarat, during the function organized by Amul for the celebration of the 75th Foundation Year of Amul.
  • This scheme with a total investment of Rs 5000 crore will be implemented by NCDC to realize the vision, “from cooperation to prosperity"".
  • This Dairy Sahakar will supplement the existing efforts for strengthening the dairy sector in the country.
  • Under Dairy Sahakar, financial support will be extended by NCDC to eligible cooperatives for activities such as bovine development, milk procurement, processing, quality assurance, value addition, branding, packaging, marketing, transportation and storage of milk and milk products, exports of dairy products within the overall objectives of ""Doubling the farmer's income"" and ""Atmanirbhar Bharat.
  • There will also be a convergence with various schemes of the government of India and/or of State Government/UT Administration/ Development agencies/ bilateral/multilateral assistance/ CSR mechanism is encouraged.

National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC)

  • It is a statutory Corporation set up under an Act of Indian Parliament on 13 March 1963.
  • The objectives of NCDC are planning and promoting programs for production, processing, marketing, storage, export and import of agricultural produce, foodstuffs, industrial goods, livestock and certain other notified commodities and services on cooperative principles and for matters concerned therewith or incidental thereto.

Other Dairy schemes by the Goverment of India

National Programme for Dairy Development (NPDD)

  • This scheme aims to enhance the quality of milk and milk products and increase the share of organized milk procurement.
  • This scheme has two components:
  1. Component 'A': It focuses on creating/strengthening infrastructure for quality milk testing equipment as well as primary chilling facilities for State Cooperative Dairy Federations/ District Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union/SHG run private dairy/Milk Producer Companies/Farmer Producer Organisations.
  • The scheme will be implemented across the country for the period of five years from 2021-22 to 2025-26.
  1. Component 'B' (Dairying Through Cooperatives): It provides financial assistance from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) as per project agreement already signed with them.
  • It is an externally aided project, envisaged to be implemented during the period from 2021-22 to 2025-26 on a pilot basis in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar initially with the objective of creation of necessary dairy infrastructure for the purpose of providing market linkages for the products in villages and for strengthening of capacity building of stake-holding institutions from village to State level.

National Dairy Plan Phase-I

  • This was a Central sector scheme that was implemented by the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying.
  • Phase - I of the National Dairy Plan was implemented by the End Implementing Agencies (EIA) for the period of 2011-12 to 2018-19.
  • The main goal of this plan was to enhance the overall milk production of the milch animals and to provide rural areas with organized milk processing sectors.
  • The plan covered 18 major milk-producing states making 90% of the total milk production of the country.
  • Various interventions were made under this plan to enhance the milk production of the milch animals.

Objectives of the National Dairy Plan Phase-I

  • It was a scientifically planned initiative and had two major objectives as follows:
  1. To increase the milk production capacity of milch animals to meet the enormously increasing milk demand.
  2. To enhance and to provide organized milk-processing sectors at the rural level.
