DRDO successfully flight tests Indian Army version of Medium Range Surface to Air Missile
- The tests, conducted at the Integrated Test Range, Chandipur, off the coast of Odisha, were carried out as part of the live firing trials against high-speed aerial targets.
- The first test was to intercept a medium-altitude, long-range target and the second against a low-altitude, short-range target.
- The missiles intercepted the targets and destroyed them completely, registering direct hits at both ranges.
About MRSAM
- It is an advanced network centric combat Air Defence System.
- It is a high response, quick reaction, vertically launched supersonic missile, designed to neutralize enemy aerial threats- missiles, aircraft, guided bombs, helicopters.
- It was jointly developed by DRDO and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) in collaboration with Indian industry consisting of private and public sectors as well as MSMEs.
- It comprises multi-function radar, mobile launcher system, and other vehicles.
- It is a 4.5m long surface-to-air missile.
- Range: 70km
- Speed: Mach 2
- It is powered by a dual-pulse solid propulsion system developed by DRDO.
- It is a land-based configuration of the long-range surface-to-air missile (LRSAM) or Barak-8 naval air defence system
- In February 2009, a contract for the MRSAM initiative was signed.
- The recent flight tests were carried out with the weapon system in deliverable configuration.
Firing unit of MRSAM
- It comprises Missiles, Mobile Launcher Systems (MLS), Combat Management System (CMS), Advanced Long-Range Radar, Reloader Vehicle (RV), Mobile Power System (MPS), Radar Power System (RPS), and Field Service Vehicle (FSV).
Significance
- It provides point and area air defence for ground assets against a wide range of threats including fighter aircraft, UAVs, helicopters, guided and unguided munitions, subsonic & supersonic cruise missiles etc.
- It is capable of engaging multiple targets at ranges up to 70 kms in severe saturation scenarios.
- In this way it will help in countering major threats to the country which are eminent from neighbouring nations.
