G4 countries highlight ‘urgent need’ for reform in UN Security Council
- Reform of the UN has been a central theme of the External Affairs Minister's visit to the UN this week.
- He recently met with his counterparts from Germany, Brazil and Japan under the G4 banner following the BRICS meeting.
Aim of G4
- Primarily focused on UNSC reform, and permanent membership for G4 members.
- UN decision making bodies needed to be urgently reformed as global issues were increasingly complex and interconnected.
- The U.S. supports expansion of the body provided it "does not alter or expand the veto".
- It also expressed concern that the 76th Session of the UNGA did not make “meaningful progress” in the Inter-Governmental Negotiations (IGN), which was constrained by a lack of transparency.
