Govt approves outlay of 14,903 crore to expand Digital India programme
- The Union Cabinet recently approved an extension of the government’s flagship Digital India scheme with an outlay of Rs 14,903 crore for five years, starting FY 2021-22 to FY 2025-26.
- Cybersecurity has been kept as a big focus of the expansion, which includes enhancing the capabilities of the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In).
- A portion of the overall outlay will also be used to fund 1,200 start-ups in tier 2 and 3 cities.
Digital India Programme
- Launched in 2015, it is a flagship programme of the Government of India.
- Objective: To transform India into a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy.
- It has been enabled for several important Government schemes.
- It includes BharatNet, Make in India, Startup India and Standup India, industrial corridors, etc.

Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-in)
- It is a functional organisation of the Ministry of Information & Electronics Technology established in 2004.
- It is the national nodal agency for responding to computer security incidents as and when they occur.
- Functions
- Collection, analysis and dissemination of information on cyber incidents;
- Forecast and alerts of cyber security incidents;
- Emergency measures for handling cyber security incidents;
- Coordination of cyber incident response activities;
- Issue guidelines, advisories, vulnerability notes and whitepapers relating to information
- Security practices, procedures, prevention, response and reporting of cyber incidents
- Such other functions relating to cyber security as may be prescribed.
