India climbs eight places to 127 in global gender index: WEF report
- Recently, the World Economic Forum (WEF) released its Global Gender Gap Report for 2023.
- The World Economic Forum (WEF) ranked India 127 out of 146 countries in its Global Gender Gap Report 2023- up eight places from last year
- The country has improved by 1.4 percentage points, marking a partial recovery towards its 2020 parity level
- India was ranked 135 in 2022
- Iceland is the most gender-equal country for the 14th consecutive year and the only one to have closed more than 90% of its gender gap
Global Gender Gap Index
- The gender gap is the difference between women and men as reflected in social, political, intellectual, cultural, or economic attainments.
- It benchmarks countries in their progress towards gender parity in four key areas:
- Economic Participation and Opportunity
- Educational Attainment
- Health and Survival
- Political Empowerment
- It provides scores between 0 and 1, where 1 shows full gender parity and 0 is complete imparity.
- It is the longest-standing index, which tracks progress towards closing these gaps over time since its inception in 2006.
Important Findings
- India has closed 64.3% of the overall gender gap
- India has attained parity in enrolment across all levels of education
- However, India has only 36.7% parity in economic participation and opportunity.
- There had been an uptick in parity in wages and income,but the share of women in senior positions and technical roles had dropped slightly.
- For India, the 1.9 percentage point improvement in sex ratio at birth had driven up parity after more than a decade
