India to host G20 summit in 2023
- The next G20 Summit is scheduled to take place in next month under Italian Presidency.
- India will be holding the G20 Presidency from 1st December 2022 and will convene the G20 Leaders’ Summit in 2023.
- Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has been appointed as India’s Sherpa for the G20.
- India will be part of the G20 Troika (preceding, current, and incoming G20 Presidencies) from 1st of December this year till 30th November 2024.
What is Sherpa?
- The Sherpa is the representative of the leaders of the G20 member states, coordinating the agenda of the conference, as well as discussing the agenda for economic, political and global discussions with the member states.
G20
- It is the international forum that brings together the world’s major economies.
- Its members account for more than 80% of world GDP, 75% of global trade and 60% of the population of the planet.
- The forum has met every year since 1999 and includes, since 2008, a yearly Summit, with the participation of the respective Heads of State and Government.
- In addition to the Summit, ministerial meetings, Sherpa meetings (in charge of carrying out negotiations and building consensus among Leaders), working groups and special events are organized throughout the year.
