ISRO will launch Gaganyaan abort mission this year, solar and lunar missions in ’23
- ISRO has set new deadlines for major missions, with its first solar mission and third lunar mission set to take place in the first quarter of next year.
ISRO’s Missions Scheduled till 2024
- XpoSat:
- A space observatory to study cosmic x-rays, scheduled for 2023.
- India’s 2nd astronomical observatory in space after the Astrosat.
- Gaganyaan’s abort demonstration mission:
- Scheduled for later in 2022.
- Abort missions: Test systems that can help the crew escape from spacecraft mid-flight in case of a failure.
- Gaganyaan’s escape system is designed with five “quick-acting” solid fuel motors with high burn rate propulsion system, and fins to maintain stability.
- ISRO conducted a pad abort test in 2018 where crew can escape from spacecraft in case of an emergency at launch pad.
- Space docking experiment:
- Scheduled for 3rd quarter of 2024.
- Space docking: Process of joining two separately launched spacecraft
- Used for setting up modular space stations.
- Launch completed in 2022
- Indian earth observation satellite
- A commercial launch carrying Singaporean earth observation satellite as the main payload.
- Aditya L1 mission
- Scheduled for 2022
- Indian spacecraft will go 1.5 million kms away to L1 or Lagrangian point b/w Sun and Earth.
- Chandrayaan 3:
- Lander-rover mission scheduled for 2022
- Aims for soft landing on the Moon.
- It will use an existing orbiter around the Moon from Chandrayaan-2 to communicate with Earth.
- Orbiter has a mission life of seven years and was launched in 2019.
