Mount Harriet in Andaman & Nicobar Island renamed Mount Manipur
- Government of India has renamed Mount Harriet National Park in Andaman and Nicobar Islands as Mount Manipur National Park.
- The renaming of Mount Harriet is a step in the direction to honor and recognize the contribution of Manipur’s freedom fighters to India’s independence.
- The people of Manipur also welcomed the decision by lighting candles in gratitude to the Government.
About Mount Harriet
- Mount Harriet, 55 km by road or 15 km by ferry and trek from Port Blair was the summer headquarters of the Chief Commissioner during British Raj.
- Mount Harriet is the highest peak in the South Andamans and was named after Col. Robert Christopher Tytler’s wife Harriet.
- Mount Harriet National Park is considered one of the main attractions and is famous for its fauna and natural flora.
- The park is covered with dense evergreen and semi-evergreen forests.

- Mount Harriet National Park will now be known as Mount Manipur National Park.
- Chief Minister, N. Biren Singh said that the renaming of ‘Mount Harriet’ to ‘Mount Manipur’ is also a tribute to Maharaj Kulachandra and 22 other martyrs of the Anglo-Manipur War 1891.
- During the colonial rule, the Britishers had exiled and jailed Maharaj Kulachandra and 22 other martyrs of the Anglo-Manipur War 1891 after witnessing their bravery, courage, spirit, and love for the country.
- Maharaja of Manipur Kulachandra Singh and 22 were imprisoned in a cellular jail, also known as the Kalapani, at Mount Harriet.
