Netaji’s statue is being installed at India Gate

  • The PM on Friday announced that a statue of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose will be installed at India Gate to mark 125th birth anniversary and honouring his contribution to the independence movement.
  • Until the installation is completed, a hologram of Netaji will be projected at the site of the statue.
  • Republic Day celebrations will also start on January 23, as opposed to the usual practice of starting it on January 24, to mark the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.
  • A special programme will also be held to honour the winners of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Aapda Prabandhan Award

About Netaji

  • Subhas Bose was born into wealth and privilege in a large Bengali family in Orissa during the British Raj.
  • The early recipient of an Anglocentric education, he was sent after college to England to take the Indian Civil Service examination.
  • In 1920 he passed the civil service examination, but in April 1921, after hearing of the nationalist turmoil in India, he resigned his candidacy and returned back to India.
  • After Returning to India, he join the nationalist movement led by Mahatma Gandhi and the Indian National Congress
  • He followed Jawaharlal Nehru to leadership in a group within the Congress which was less keen on constitutional reform and more open to socialism.
  • He became Congress president in 1938.
  • He is famously known as the founder of 'Azad Hind Fauj' and his famous slogan is 'Tum Mujhe Khoon Do, Main Tumhe Aazadi Dunga'.
  • He had made several contributions to India's freedom struggle.
  • He had also launched a struggle to free India from British rule under the banner of the provisional government-in-exile during the latter part of the Second World War.
  • He is known for his militant approach that he used to gain independence and for his socialist policies.

  • The award is announced every year on 23rd January, the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose

  • The year long celebrations to mark 125th birth anniversary of netaji was also started on this day
