NSS survey indicate considerable rise in farmers’ income
- National Sample Survey’s 77th round Situation Assessment of Agricultural Households (SAS) was Conducted during the Kharif and rabi seasons of 2018-19.
- The survey provides insight into a farmer’s investment behavior, level of indebtedness, and income earned from different activities.
- It showed a considerable rise in farmers’ incomes.

- Indian National Sample Survey (NSS) is one of the oldest continuing household sample surveys in the developing world.
- The survey is conducted on a regular basis by the National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO).

- NSSO was set up in 1950, with the idea of having a permanent survey organization to collect data on various facets of the economy.
- In order to assist in socio-economic planning and policy making, NSSO conducts nationwide sample surveys known as National Sample Survey (NSS).
- The surveys are conducted through household interviews, using a random sample of households covering practically the entire geographical area of the country.
Rise in farmers’ income
- As per the survey, the average monthly income of a farmer from various sources which include wages, leasing out land, crop production, livestock, and non-farm business – has increased to Rs 10,218 during 2018-19.
- Notably, the assessment shows an average annual rise in income at about 8% in nominal price and 6% in real price from 2011-12.
- The report also provides the monthly income of farmers to be the highest in agriculturally advanced states – Punjab and Haryana.
