PRASHAD Scheme – Phase II

  • Prime Minister inaugurated various development projects in Varanasi on Thursday (15 july)
  • The projects included Tourist Facilitation Centre under the Project “Development of Varanasi Under PRASHAD Scheme – Phase II” and Operation of Cruise Boat from Assi Ghat to RajGhat under the Project “Development of River Cruise in Varanasi under PRASHAD Scheme”.

National Mission on Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual, Heritage Augmentation Drive’ (PRASHAD)

  • Central Sector Scheme fully financed by the Government of India
  • Launched by the Ministry of Tourism in the year 2014-15 with the
  • Objective:
  1. integrated development of identified pilgrimage and heritage destinations.
  2. Harness pilgrimage tourism for its multiplier and direct effect on employment generation and economic development.
  3. Follow pro-poor tourism concept and community-based development in the development of the pilgrimage destinations.
  1. Leveraging public expertise and capital.
  2. Enhance tourist attractiveness sustainably by developing world-class infrastructure in religious destinations.
Scheme aims at infrastructure development such as:
  1. Entry points (Road, Rail and Water Transport) and last mile connectivity,
  2. Basic tourism facilities like Information/ Interpretation Centers,
  3. ATM/ Money exchange,
  4. Eco-friendly modes of transport,
  5. Area Lighting and illumination with renewable sources of energy,
  1. Basic facilities like parking, drinking water, toilets, cloak room, waiting rooms, first aid centers
  2. Craft bazars /haats/ souvenir shops/ cafeteria,
  3. Telecom facilities, internet connectivity etc.
  • The project “Development of Varanasi Under PRASHAD Scheme – Phase II” was approved by the Ministry of Tourism with the cost of Rs. 44.69 crores in Feb. 2018.
  • The components viz. ‘Panchkoshi Path’, ‘Pilgrim Facilitation Center’, ‘Rameshwar’, ‘Road Development’ and ‘Signages’ have been successfully completed and dedicated to the nation.
  • The project “Development of River Cruise in Varanasi under PRASHAD Scheme” was approved by the Ministry of Tourism with the cost of Rs. 10.72 crores in Feb. 2018.
  • The components viz. ‘Passenger Cum Cruise Vehicle’, ‘Modular Jetty’, ‘Audio Visual Interventions’, and ‘CCTV Surveillane’ have been successfully completed and dedicated to the nation.

Functioning of PRASAD Scheme

  • Ministry of Tourism has set up a Mission Directorate for implementing the PRASAD scheme.
  • The Directorate identifies projects in the identified cities and coordinates with the states/UTs and other stakeholders to implement this scheme.
  • A Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee sanctions projects submitted by the Mission Directorate.
  • A National Steering Committee is also constituted for the overall review, guidance and monitoring of this scheme.
