Swachh Survekshan 2022: why Capital continues to score poorly
- Despite spending a huge amount on sanitation services, Delhi’s three erstwhile municipal corporations (North, South and East) continue to rank poor in the Swachh Survekshan 2022 .
- Indore has retained the top spot in the rankings for the sixth consecutive year.
Reasons for poor performance

- Improper segregation of waste (poor enforcement of solid waste management rules)
- Minimal public awareness.
Parameters of the Survey
- Service-level progress (SLP) based on the data provided by urban local bodies;
- Certification based on waste management, sanitation — garbage-free city (GFC) and open defecation-free categories (ODF)
- Citizens feedback and engagement (citizens’ voice category).
Why Indore has been scoring well since 6 consecutive years
- Indore segregates waste into 6 categories instead of two. This includes:
- Wet
- Dry
- Plastic
- Domestic hazardous
- Sanitary waste
- Electronic waste
- Political will displayed by Mayors and councillors who placed sanitation as a priority.
