TRIFOOD scheme
- Tertiary value addition centres being set up in tribal areas of Jagdalpur and Raigad under TRIFOOD
- Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India Limited (TRIFED), under the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, has its own E-commerce portal www.tribesindia.com to market tribal products.
TRIFOOD Scheme
- It is a joint initiative of the Ministry of Food Processing Industry, Ministry of Tribal Affairs and TRIFED.
- It is being implemented in the backdrop of VanDhan Yojana
- It will promote value addition to Minor Forest Produce (MFP).
- The units are envisaged to be professionally operated by reputed food processors who will operate the facilities for a designated period of time under the overall administrative control of TRIFED
- This will ensure that assets created are efficiently commercially utilised as per its installed capacities and designed objectives.
- It will create local employment opportunities for the tribal communities and providing entrepreneurial opportunities in terms of raw material linkages to the units.
- About 25% of total raw materials is expected to be sourced locally from the identified Vandhan SHGs/Vandhan Kendras in the catchment areas as per the grade and quantity requirement, consistently for period of 5 years.
- Under this scheme, tertiary value addition centres are being set up by TRIFED at Jagdalpur in Chhattisgarh and Raigad in Maharashtra at a cost of approximately Rs.11 crore.
- Commodities to be Processed: Mahua, Amla, Jamun, Custard Apple ,Cashew, Tamarind, Ginger, Garlic & Other Fruits & Vegetables
- Livelihood Generation Potential from TRIFOOD Projects: 2.5 lakh tribal gatherers.
About Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India (TRIFED):
- It was established in August 1987 under the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act, 1984 by the Government as a National level Cooperative body.
- It works under the administrative control of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs
- Functions:
- Bring about socio-economic development of tribals of the country by institutionalising the trade of Minor Forest Produce (MFP) & Surplus Agricultural Produce (SAP) collected/ cultivated by them.
- Playing the dual role of both a market developer and a service provider, empowering tribals with knowledge and tools to better their operations in a systematic, scientific manner
- Assist them in developing marketing approach.
- Capacity building of tribal people through sensitization and the formation of Self Help Groups (SHGs).
- Assistance in exploring and creating opportunities to market the developed products in national and international markets on a sustainable basis. "
