  • Two anti-submarine warfare shallow watercrafts vessels (ASWCWC) of the Indian Navy were launched at Cochin Shipyard here on Monday.

  • On Monday, two Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Watercraft (ASWCWC) vessels of the Indian Navy, named INS Malpe and INS Mulki, were launched at Cochin Shipyard. These vessels are the fourth and fifth in a series of eight ships designed for coastal anti-submarine operations.

Key Specifications of the Vessels:

  • Length: 78 meters
  • Width: 11.36 meters
  • Draught: 2.7 meters
  • Maximum Speed: 25 knots
  • Endurance: 1,800 nautical miles
  • Displacement: 900 tons
  • Propulsion Power: 12 MW
  • Equipped with indigenous sonar for underwater surveillance and weapons like light-weight torpedoes, ASW rockets, mines, close-in weapon system (30mm gun), and 12.7mm remote-controlled guns.

Role and Purpose:

  • The Mahe-class ships, replacing the Abhay class ASW Corvettes, are designed for anti-submarine operations in coastal waters, low-intensity maritime operations, mine-laying operations, and search and rescue missions. The vessels enhance tactical and operational capabilities in shallow waters, contributing to India's maritime security.

Indigenization and Self-Reliance:

  • The construction contract was signed between the Ministry of Defence and Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) in April 2019. Speaking at the event, Vice Admiral V.
  • Srinivas emphasized the importance of self-reliance, with almost all equipment on the vessels being indigenously produced. This highlights India's capability to secure its maritime interests amid geopolitical challenges.
