World Competitiveness Index

  • In June 2021, the World Competitiveness Yearbook (WCY) 2021 was published by the Institute for Management Development (IMD).
  • India maintained the 43rd position in the annual World Competitiveness Index.
  • Switzerland (1st), Sweden (2nd), Denmark (3rd), Netherlands (4th), and Singapore (5th) are in this list.
  • Singapore was at the top of this list in 2020.
  • Taiwan reached the top-10 for the first time
  • Among the BRICS nations, India is ranked second after China (16), followed by Russia (45th), Brazil (57th) and South Africa (62th).

Systems and factors:

  • The ranking, produced annually by the IMD World Competitiveness Center.
  • It publishes rankings for 64 countries
  • This year, the rankings also consider the economic impact of the pandemic across the globe.
  • It measures the prosperity and competitiveness by examining four factors --
  1. Economic performance,
  2. Government efficiency,
  3. Business efficiency, and
  4. Infrastructure.
  • WCY was first published in 1989.
