World day for International justice
- World Day for International Justice is observed across the globe on July 17 in order to mark an emerging modern system of justice against international criminal acts.
- International Criminal Court (ICC) was formally established on this day following adoption of Rome Statute for which the day is observed.
- The Day is celebrated by honouring individuals working to advocate the fundamental human rights of victims affected by criminal acts.
International Criminal Court
- ICC investigates and, where warranted, tries individuals charged with the gravest crimes of concern to the international community
- It is a court of last resort for the prosecution of serious international crimes
- The court’s founding treaty, the Rome Statute, was adopted in July 1998, and the court began work in 2003.
- The treaty grants the ICC jurisdiction over four main crimes:
- Genocide
- Crimes against humanity
- War crimes
- Crime of aggression
- As a court of last resort, it seeks to complement, not replace, national courts.
- It is also the world's first permanent international criminal court.
- Currently, 123 countries are ICC members
Importance of day
- Technological developments over the last decade have helped human beings navigate the Covid-19 landscape.
- Use of Digital platforms have increased.
- However, there is also the added risk of criminal acts resorting to digital means, even more so when the streets continue to be under strict vigil over pandemic-appropriate behaviour.
- Thus, a need to spread awareness over criminal justice on a digital platform is more than ever.
- The theme of this year has been kept ""social justice in the digital economy"" keeping in mind the same mentioned fact above.
